Tucked inside the Milwaukee Athletic Club, the Elephant Room has long been one of the city’s most beloved mid-century lounges. First unveiled in 1948 and designed by Eschweiler & Eschweiler, the space became a gathering place where business deals were sealed, cocktails were savored, and members lingered beneath its signature elephant murals. When it came time to restore this iconic room, our team took on the challenge with deep respect, and a clear mission to let its storied past shine.
Guided by historic preservation standards, we approached the renovation as an opportunity to breathe new life into the room without disturbing the elements that make it so distinctive. The original tropical murals were carefully protected and restored, and the famed elephant brass bar rail and classic bar were preserved as the heart of the space. These details, rich with mid-century character, serve as anchors to its 1940s cocktail-lounge roots.
Around these treasured features, we introduced thoughtful updates that enhance comfort and experience while honoring the room’s original spirit. Fresh seating, warm lighting, and refined finishes were selected to complement the existing palette—adding sophistication without overshadowing the historic craftsmanship. The result is a room that feels both timeless and freshly revived.
Today, the Elephant Room remains a vibrant social hub, much like it was in its mid-century heyday. With its restored charm it continues to welcome guests into a lush, nostalgic escape—where history, hospitality, and heritage all come together in one unforgettable lounge.
